Question:
Buy Or Sell: DJ Premier beats are just a little too repetitive?
2010-02-20 13:17:49 UTC
I know I'll probably receive massive hate from Craftsman for saying this, but, Premier beats star to sound the same to me after a while. Sure, his beats are dope.. don't get me wrong. But sounding the same over and over can be a little boring... Nobody wants to hear the same beat each time.

Sell. They're more than just a little too repetitive. They're WAY too repetitive. He uses exactly the same technique on nearly every beat. A 2 bar loop with boom bap drums and a simple tune, then a vocal sample with scratching in the hook. That's 95% of the beats he's ever made.

Uh sell, I thought beats were suppose to be repetitive? Premo's beats are perfect for flowing over. His sound compliments the rapper (doesn't distract me, the listener, from the lyrics). The rhymes create the variations of sound in the same way a guitar would.

If his beats sound dope then I don't see a problem with this because it's accomplishing its goal. And you're not hearing the same beat each time as Premo uses different samples and drum patterns. Maybe they sound the same sometimes, but that's because that's his sound. A lot of the best producers/musicians have their own sound. I know what a Premo beat is suppose to sound like, as do I know what a Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, etc. is to sound like as well.

Yea I think most would agree, from an unbiased point of view.

But then again, sometimes that's all it takes to make a dope beat.

There are producers out there who try so hard to arrange layers and layers and layers of samples. thinking its gonna sound great, but it ends up sounding too experimental and weird.

Put that up against a simple Premo beat that uses one or two looped samples and Premo would win every time.

Repetitive? Yes.

But it gets the job done, and has been keeping ppl nodding their heads for 20 years now.

It ultimately comes down to what type of production appeals to you the most.

I like complex beats as much as the next guy, but Premo's beats are equally amazing IMO.

Im LMAO! I would have said buy back in the day, but now its considered wack. Only the ones who dont have any passion for hip hop are the ones who call it wack so U cant really sell it to them beacause the wont buy. So what would I do. The best thing to do is give it away. I would give it to a young producer who can sample its style, not a str8 jack but its flavor, and give it that new tick and bounce. There been like two or 3 genres inside of rap/hip-hop. what we think is the original is not and now there is a new rap coming with these new kids also.

no one can f*ck with Preem at beats. i've got come to comprehend this over the final 12 months of nonstop hip-hop listening. Kno is taken into consideration one of my own favorites, and that i admire the Cunninlynguists, yet Primo > Kno all day any day. like countless different guy pronounced up there ^ ^ Kno could be a precise instrumentalist because of the fact he's very stable at layering sounds and making stuff sound dope. while it comprises making musical canvas's for emcees to coach into classics, it is the place ultimate outshines something.

First of all, I would like to point out that while he did stick to his master formula for most of his beats since around 1995ish, there is an obvious difference between some of his old school ish and his newer formula. Clearly there is a difference between:

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSh1dLlBaHw

So its not exactly true to say all his beats sound exactly the same.

Second of all, repetitive from what I've heard means two things in this section, so I'll break down why both of them are weak criticism's of Dj Premier.

The first way in which I hear people use the term "repetitive" when refering to Premier is "all his beats sound the same." Which means you are basically criticizing him for having a signature style. My question then is this: When did that become a bad thing? His style is the best, that's why he continues to use it. It's called being consistent. I'd rather he stick to what he does best and do that to perfection then try to dabble in other styles and have it come out half @ssed. Also, I think it warrants mentioning that other great producers have signature styles too. They may deviate from them a little more than Premo, but that minor deviation does not warrant overlooking the far superior quality of Dj Premier's catalogue.

The other way in which I hear people use the term "repetitive" is an even weaker criticism than the signature style argument. Basically the second repetitive argument is "his beats just loop the same 5 seconds or so over and over for the entire beat." Newsflash MOST HIP HOP BEATS DO THIS! That's why its called a beat. A beat is supposed to be a few seconds of music looped over and over. That's the foundation of production. Pete Rock does the same thing, RZA does the same thing, everyone does that. What do you expect there to be a guitar solo in the middle of the beat? Give me a break. The same people who criticize beats for not being complex are the same people who count up syllables to determine how good a verse was. It's not a legitimate criticism.

Furthermore this is all besides the point. Bottom line, his beats sound the best. People used to put him at number one on their GOAT lists for exactly that reason. Now people have gotten so caught up in trivial technicalities that they are just trying to find any BS excuse to discredit the legend. You aren't supposed to be breaking down these beats like that. Just nod your head and enjoy the beat. Beats are for enjoyment. And I think its funny how everyone is preaching this anti-elitist gospel and making a big deal about how its more important that the music be entertaining than that it be technical, but then these same people turn around and criticize Premo for not being technical. Dj Premier is an entertainer. His beats are the most enjoyable to listen to. That is why he is number one.

Not to mention the obvious. He uses different samples in every song, different drums (he may have recycled drums a few times without me noticing, but I know he has a sh*tload of different drum patterns because I've sampled them out of his songs on FL Studio), and different scratches/samples of MC's in his scratched choruses. That's enough variation to keep me interested.

Repetitive yes but like a Porsche or Ferrari one sticks to a classic design and formula.

Everyone is repetitive. Most of the best producers have their own unique style which they use in the majority of their beats. You guys act like your listening to one beat over and over again. All his beats are different, if you're going to knock him for using a similar style you have to knock everyone else who does that. If you mean repetitive as in using the same loop over and over, every single hip hop beat does that pretty much.
2010-02-20 13:35:40 UTC
No! his beats are just perfect, no gimmicky **** and stripped down to focus on the lyricist but not enough to take away from the beat!

*Waits for Craftsman to come out of nowhere are and defend Premo to the death*

But sure, I'll buy... They're dope as hell though.
