As a ex-professional sound engineer in both studio and location recording I'm used to the likes of AKG 141, Sennheiser HD's and Sony!
Sound quality, Comfort, and closed/open are other factors.
Now the Beats by Dre and Sol republic are a different kettle of fish!
"they" are quality headphones and yet they are not?
Endorsed by famous people 'do not' make them good
because a singers do not have good hearing!
They sing notes, the recordings are left to the engineer!
Firstly both the beats and Sol are rather simlar in sound.
too heavy Bass is no good detail is lost to deep thumping sound
which is no-good and thats the Beats Studio 2 as endorsed by Dr. Dre .
it is not a all-rounder head set and may suit those who like
heavy bass sounds and mid tones is soft!
The Sol republic Tracks Hd too has a heavy bass but not like the Beats
which gets drowned out! The Sol has better Mid/Treble, could also be due to the way it sits on the ear too?
I am more bias towards the Sol it has better clarity and imagery.
my four songs of choice in using them was Sinead O'Connors
"Troy", (because of it vocals and strings and ambiance and sharp vocals)
Noisettes "Never forget you" because of its bass guitar and group vocals and rock sound!
Cameo "word up" because of its great funk sound
and digital drum bass!
And a concert recording I made on a 24 track 8-2 Soundcraft Delta Analogue desk of a various male/female choirs and some professional artists on a Open stage. using a Carlec Sound field Mic and Neumann Mics shared with a live desk.
The beats was nice on low volumes but as it got higher the Bass started to overact and loose detail in the treble especially on the Sinead OConnor song straight from near silence to full string orchestra sound!
on the it was great with both the Noisettes and Cameo songs.
but again lacking detail and my own recording they sound ok
but no bass to mask the weakness of the earphones
On the Sol Republic, again a deep bass but not to heavy!
may be too much mid tone shallow sound in areas.
It was great with Cameo and Noisettes, and O'Connors Troy
was again little like the Beats but not too bad! Did suffer a little on the treble too over bright.
Anyway thats my opinion of their sound
build quality Sol republic all the way, it says its headband is indestructible also the cable can be changed if snagged.
verdict.
Beats nice deep bass, very nice feel and comfort shame about
the general sound, definitely not worth £200+
Sol Republic sound is similar if not shallower and little more detailed.
A good Studio AKG 240 or !41 are not as expensive and these are what musicians around the world use, yet you can buy two for the price of one Dre.
You are paying for the name, endorsement and style sake.
Ill go for a Sol Republic Tracks HD its cheaper, parts are self removable and damaged parts can be replaced.
