I'm trying to make a general list, not just top 10.

Here's some preliminary stuff.

DJ Premier
RZA
Dr. Dre
Pete Rock
Large Professor
Prince Paul
Erick Sermon

I think all these guys would make my top 10 for sure. I'm consdering:

DJ Quik
The Neptunes
Buckwild
Trackmasters
Rick Rubin
Kanye West
Madlib
J Dilla
?uestlove
Diamond D
Easy Moe Bee
Marley Marl
Da Beatminerz
ATCQ
Grandmaster Flash

People who I don't think make it who you might:

Just Blaze
9th Wonder
The Alchemist
Dan The Automator
Havoc
The Bomb Squad
Kno
El-P
Lord Finesse
Mannie Fresh
DJ Screw
Biz Markie
Organized Noize
Swizz Beats
Timbaland

Ok, so gimme some feedback.

I hit up that list and left out some people who I felt weren't unique enough to be mentioned as having a chance for the list (a notable omission is Salaam Remi).

What do you think?

Well, I finally got around to answering this.

I don't really see what I can offer here (especially as far as a top 10 or 20 goes), apart from perhaps a random assortment of primarily instrumental artists I feel like shortlisting.

Boom Bip

DJ Krush

DJ Shadow

DJ Spooky

Fat Jon

Flying Lotus

Meaty Ogre

Nujabes

Omid

RJD2

Oh yeah, I think Trackmasters should be in with a shout as far as the top 20 goes. I wouldn't necessarily have them there but I think they're often slightly overlooked and get lost in the mix with the more obvious candidates.

Madlib is definite to me. Erick Sermon not so much. I mean I like his stuff a great deal, from his work with EPMD to his solo to his stuff for other artists (particularly Redman). He does have a very solid a*s discography, but some of it isn't as exceptional as others and I don't think he's made any real game changing joints as far as production goes (well, not as game changing as some of the others you left off your list).
