Question:
RHH: A few questions...?
2012-04-12 13:16:29 UTC
1. 2 albums where one is better than the other lyrically, production-wise, but the other
has more prestige and "had a huge impact on hip hop".
Example: 36 Chambers and Wu Tang Forever

2. What's a rapper or group that gets high praise on here from user(s) that you
don't like?

3. Which Atmosphere album would you say Slug was the best on?
Your choice will likely differ from your favorite Atmosphere album, which is what
I think would be the case. His albums with Murs, Dynospectrum, and Deep Puddles
are choices as well if you can make a case for them.

4. What's your guilty pleasure TV show?

5. What would you say is/was the driving force behind these groups? It can be a
member, musical element, pretty much anything.
Some of these are obvious and some aren't.

- The Roots
- A Tribe Called Quest
- Cunninlynguists
- Dilated Peoples
- Jurassic 5

6. Name some artists that sound like those who came before them.
The ones bringing back the "old-school" flavor.
Example: Reks

1. Wu Tang Forever > 36 Chambers. I realize this might sound a little backwards, since the group's era of fame was probably best brought on by Forever, which hit number one on the charts, but go to just about any site claiming to have a list of the best hip hop albums of all time, and Forever will not be listed, whereas 36 Chambers gets a lot of love. I think just the classic status it's gained over time and the fact that it was a revolutionary introduction to the group's styles might lead people to dismiss the prowess displayed by the members of the Wu on Forever. Reality is, in terms of lyricism and otherwise, Forever is far ahead.

2. You guys might hate me for this, but Tupac.

3. Godlovesugly, though I haven't listened to Atmosphere/Slug in a minute.

4. Canada's Got Talent. It's pretty bad I think, the only reason I got into it was because a friend of mine was on it.

5. The Roots - Variety. Subject content goes from intensely personal and emotional, to generally relateable themes, to world issues

A Tribe Called Quest - Catchyness (is that a word?) They've had some great choruses.

Cunninlynguists - Production, most definitely

Dilated Peoples - Ev

Jurrasic 5 - I'm gonna agree with most people on Chali 2na

6. I'm drawing a blank... Saigon maybe..

1. wtf, all the good answers are taken lol

co-sign everyone and I'll add The Format > Doe or Die by AZ. The Format is extremely underrated and I'd personally rather listen to it than DoeOrDie.

2. Odd Future, I like their movement but hate thier music, I haven't heard a great song by them yet, honestly. Also I'm not a big 9th Wonder fan anymore, I don't think he's one of the best to ever do it, he had a great run in the early to mid 2000's but his beats have gotten stale since and what made him so original to begin with is now old and predictable.

3. Lyrcially? Probably When Life Gives You Lemons... or even You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having too.. What an awful album title name lol, it's such a great album it could even be their best, but that title is such a turn off to me.

4. I don't really watch a lot of TV anymore, I will watch just about any original FX show. I did use to watch the OC when I was younger... that was pretty gay

5. The Roots - Quest Love

ATCQ - Q-Tip

Cunninlynguists - Kno

Dilated Peoples - I want to say Ev/Babu, but it was definitely a collective

J5 - This was definitely a group effort, everyone held each other down, they were great together

6. Big KRIT bringing back southern conscious (or starting southern conscious? maybe...)

Dude reminds me of a southern version of Tupac

and Action Bronson too, doing the Wu Tang "throwing darts" style of rap

1.) Vaudeville Villain > Madvillainy

2.) Umm...there's alot. Alot of 90s groups I dislike, like Das EFX or Brand Nubian...but they aren't mentioned too often. I guess Murs fits. I've just never been a fan of his...

3.) Overcast! is his best from a technical standpoint. I'll go with that since he'll generally have at least one corny song on his albums...so I can't really say he's all that much better on any one album lyrically over the other, though I would say WLGYL has the highest highs. God Loves Ugly is my personal favorite overall...

4.) Elfen Lied. It's got pretty blatant pointless use of ultra-violence and gratuitous nudity...but it's still something I can't look away from, even if I think it's a meh show.

5.) The Roots - Live Instrumentation

ATCQ - Jazz samples

CunninLynguists - Their artistic progression. They've grown a huge amount through their discography from WRFF.

Dilated Peoples - Ev. No one really cares about Rakaa (except me) ): Though I think highly of Babu...

J5 - Chali 2na.

6.) Hopsin = Eminem

1. Don't Sweat the Technique > Paid in Full. I think 36 Chambers is better than Forever in both production and lyricism. You may say that the lyricism is more complex, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's better. 36 Chambers has more memorable lines and everybody's energy brings the lyricism to a different level (IMO).

2. Tyler, the Creator maybe? I don't really care for what I've heard from him.

3. I'm not really familar with their work, so I couldn't give you a good answer.

4. American Idol, I guess. I don't watch much though.

5. The Roots - experimentation, willing to try different things.

ATCQ - Q-Tip

CunninLyguist - Kno

Dilated Peoples - I guess they do it for the love of hip hop.

Jurassic 5 - They don't seem to have much of a driving force right now.

6. Damu the Fudgemunk
??

1. Uhhh...Idk, maybe Aquemini>The Low End Theory

2. MF DOOM, I really don't know what's so great about him other than his production, dude literally talks over beats, nothing that amazing to me.

3. God Loves Ugly, even tho I didn't like Ant's production, I felt that Slug was in Beast Mode on that ish.

4. Probably Two and a Half Men or perhaps WWE, even tho it's pvssy shlt nowadays, I still watch it.

5. The Roots - Live instrumentation

ATCQ - Q-Tip and the jazzy production

Cunninlynguists - Kno for his production

Dilated Peoples - N/A

Jurassic 5 - Chali 2na

6. Maybe Rasheed Chappell.
?

1. I prefer 2001 to the Chronic in every aspect, but it isn't as influential.

2. Generally I like most rappers that are highly regarded around here, I tried listening to Busdriver and I thought he was a bit too weird. I don't consider 2Pac or Biggie to be all that legendary but alot of people on here agree they're overrated.

3. When Life Gives You Lemonds... his storytelling on that was brilliant

4. maybe Friends, I don't even think it's that good but for some reason I like it more than I should

5. The Roots: Obviously Black Thought's lyricism is a huge draw considering he's arguably one of the GOATs but really they have a perfect balance with great production and live instrumentation too.

A Tribe Called Quest: The overall laid back jazzy vibes makes ATCQ one of the best groups. Q-Tip is one of my favourite rappers and producers but I think Phife Dawg is often overlooked as well.

CunninLynguists - Easily Kno's production. Natti and Deacon aren't spectacular lyricists so he's defiantly the only reason why they can make such incredible music.

Dilated Peoples: They always get great beats from Alchemist, and generally have production that matches their style well. Evidence and Rakaa have good conscious subject matter too.

Jurassic 5: Chali 2na is defiantly the standout rapper in the group, their all good though and I like Cut Chemist's production style with extensive use of scratches too.

6. Roc Marciano has that classic 90's mafioso style
Rhyme Sayer

1. 3 Feet Hish and Rising and De La Soul is Dead

2. Aesop Rock

3. When Life Give You Lemons... however I haven't heard all of his albums

4. Don't have one

5.

-The Roots- Black Thought's insane spitting and the group's altogether mellow attitude

-A Tribe Called Quest- Q-Tip's dope drum patterns and chill beats

- Cunninlynguists- Kno's incredible sampling and fluency in beats

- Dilated Peoples- Evidence is dope as hell. That's all I know about em.

- Jurassic 5- They go real good together

6. Big KRIT sounds old school south as f*ck, but with his own taste
2012-04-13 08:37:15 UTC
