What do you think makes a rap song good?

I believe the key to a good rap song is having words THAT RYHME! Rap means 'RYHME( or is it RYTHM?) and POETRY. R.A.P.
A lot of these popular rappers don't use words that ryhme in their songs.They just talk and sell loads of records e.g. 50 Cent.Try listening closely to his lyrics and you will see most of them don't ryhme.I just listened to 'One Mic' by Nas recently closely and very few words ryhme in it . It has a great beat but that lack of ryhme alone makes the song wack for me.But an awesome use of ryhming words can be found in 'Clothes Off' by Gym Class Heroes.Just give it a good listen.A lot of people think rap is just about street cred,sounding tough and a tight beat and forget the basic building block:RYHME!

The tunes have to sound good. Anybody can rap over the top of a standard backing track (ie The Streets) but some artists like the Stereo MCs actually craft some really ear-worthy tunes where you can discern distinct influences.



The semantic quality of the lyrics also helps. Again, anybody can make a song about their 'hoes' or drive-by shootings, but that gets really tedious after a while. It's all me, me, me. A quality rapper can write songs about a wide range of subjects, and also use witty or intriguing vocabulary (ie Just Jack).



Then of course there is the quality of the flows themselves. I am always impressed by rappers who can get their tongues around some difficult rhymes. You can hear this especially with rappers like Stakka Bo, whose native language isn't English; or Die Fantastischen Vier, who use German, even though it isn't though of as a particularly mellifluous language.

For me back in the day,it was how clever they were with their lyrics, not just if they ryhmed.For example,Tone Loc said one lyric: ' I'll make you see what Stevie had to Wonder'. Other people who made good use of lyrics were: Das Efx,Tuff Crew & JVC Force.When JVC came out with 'Strong Island' it blew everyone away because it was ahead of its time.Its not just about ryhming,its about 'flowing' the lyrics.Check out the crews i gave you,well worth a look.

Poetry does not have to rhyme, there is no law about it. I will listen to the track you suggest at some point soon but to be honest I'd rather listen to Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan if I want to hear rap.

what makes a good rap song is truth.... something that will inspire the public.. touch them or make there jaws drop from disbelief from what you just said... when writing your rap song always remember the story dosent have to be about what you lived.. it can be about what you see.. read everyday.... try not to slip into the eminem/50 cent style bro its fading out... do a mouth to mouth with rap and revive real hip hop from the dead.. best of look bro hope it all works out.

good hip hop is rhyme..definately..but i dont like the **** that talks bout stuff that aint important at all..[50 Cent] no talent at all and just needs cars n girls in his videos and a song about something as stupid as window shopping :S and he's set. He just came out off Eminem..who i used to like with songs like Stan etc etc..but since gone all stupid aswell..
