No, it means you have good taste. Today's music is either safe, G-rated pop or over-sexualized and under-talented 'artists' who rely too much on the style and not enough on the substance of creating eternal quality music.
Born in the 60's, our parents played us symphonies, show tunes and swing music on top of the British Invasion and Acid Rock we loved. Sheltered in the 70's, listening to a lot of Soft Rock, we didn't discover Classic Metal til the 80's after Disco Demolition paved the way for New Wave to take over. And that was almost worse than Disco. Thank God for Punk and Hair Metal.
Everything changed when the Internet took over, bands didn't need a record label to 'make it big' anymore and record executives couldn't exploit their talent like they used to. They had to find new ways to do that using the web so they invented streaming. Really crappy music was released to the general public who doesn't know any better, turning some of it into gold. 'Real' musicians struggle but most have the backing of professional production and tour support to keep them on top.
Brooke made a comment about mainstream radio and in Chicago, we have two Classic Rock stations that don't play anything new by Classic Rock bands. Why do you think Steven Tyler went Country? So they'd play his sh!t on the radio, even if it is on a Country station.
In the past ten years, bands like Black Sabbath, Rush, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones have released new, critically acclaimed and Grammy winning music, that radio has ignored. Bands rely on their fan base to find it on their own because radio executives don't have record executives telling them what to play anymore with cash or cocaine attached to the 'stack of wax' that is now just electronic programming.
While I like most types of music, I cannot stand Rap, the monotonal monotony of the 'singer' mumbling to the beat and only being able to recognize the one word we must not say. I also cannot stand House music or Improvisational Jazz with the same reason for both - formless, seemingly unending with no structure or recognizable theme.
