Question:
Are you old when you dislike the music of today?

I'm born 1990 and I listened to a wide range of music growing up. Of course there was crappy pop with Aqua, Britney Spears and all the boy bands. But there was also amazing music with Nirvana, Red Hop Chili Peppers and rappers such as Biggie and Tupac. Rap during the 90s and up to 05ish was amazing.
But then something happened. I don't know what.

But most rock and rap artists sang about things that are relevant today. Mainstream music was good. But today it's just so much trash. I'm not saying that there wasn't trash music when I grew up, of course there was. And there is great music today as well. Just not the mainstream music. I just thought that back in the day mainstream music was good and people didn't just sing about **** and @ss and sex. Everything today is just overly sexualized.

I just saw Fergies new video. You know Fergie from The Black Eyes Peas? The Black Eyed Peas were one of the greats in the 00s. But then they also started playing more club music. Fergie was part of that band and that era and her new video gave my eyes cancer. I just don't understand how people can listen to songs like that and go "Oh, yeah. That goes straight to the heart".

Maybe I'm getting old?

Okay...I was born in 1940... I still like the R and B of the late 50's. Back seat mood music! Bitchin'! Late fifties and early sixties 'bubble gum' music...what a disgrace... The folk music of the mid sixties along with protest songs, Dylan, Donovan, Buffy St. Marie and Ian and Sylvia... that still holds up. Disco? The less said the better. Reggia holds up... Jimmy Cliff, Marley and Tosh still work for me. The Eagles and some of the other 'hair bands' still rock and Willy Nelson's 'On the Road Again' is classic. The Beatles changed everything while Rap....not so good, but that's an old guys opinion. Pop music sucks... it's all formula... the talent is there, but it's wasted on mostly noise. I'm waiting for the next turn... at 76 I hope it gets here pretty quick if you know what I mean!

This happens every so often. I think the last time it was so in the forefront was the late 50s early 60s. The music industry, if we can even call it that anymore, goes from caring about the MUSIC and cares more about how the acts LOOK. Go back and look at a time when music was dominated by such rock stars as...Pat Boone....Ricky Nelson.....Nancy Sinatra.... You'll start to see a scary similarity. The Beatles played the songs they did because they got tired of having Cliff Richards stuffed down their throats. They liked Elvis and Little Richard and Gene Vincent, but none of them set out to be LIKE those guys after awhile. THATS whats missing from today's music culture. All the girls want to BE Britney or Taylor because they see the popularity and the MONEY and fame. Same with the bands. They want the FAME of The Beatles or whoever showed up last week but they have zero interest in being DIFFERENT. Its a popularity contest now. I try like blazes to give new bands and singers a chance because I am HOPING to see the next Beatles or Springsteen or Nirvana emerge, but its not going to happen....not as long as there are shows that let us VOTE who we think is the "Best". We've all seen High School. We all know how the popular kids get voted king and queen. So, can we agree that if the next "Voice" winner or whatever puts out music and it TANKS that...oops..maybe the results were SKEWED

Go to a local bar or festival some day. Not late for the "Headliner" but early for the bands who are just thrilled to be in the place.....you'll see where the real music is living, Buried under the ten trillion likes for x boy band because ..."OH THAT LEAD SINGER IS SO HOT"....to put it in perspective. Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would be playing back yard barbecues if they were a new band today. WHY? They're so...like...GRUNGY man! Not at ALL cute like that dreamy talented guy from.....whats the bands name again?!

If we all went blind tomorrow...you'd hear the change..

Big record companies today look for generic music that they think a large amount of people will generally like. They aren't inclined to give someone a voice if they think parts of their music will be controversial or speak out against or for a cause. Maroon 5 caught on pretty quick, their music has changed alot over the years and they've adapted well but won't be remembered as anything Earth-shattering even though they've made hits for this many years. (Sunday Morning is one of my all-time favorite songs though, when they were trying to be a band and be distinct)

I don't feel old when I too (born 1994) dislike today's music, but I definitely appreciate good music alot more and know it's hard to come by. It also made me appreciate bands and songs from other genres I wouldn't normally listen too (for example I recently really started liking Nirvana when I disliked them before a year ago) after I stopped listening to top 40 type stations. If anything I feel sorry for people born growing up around 2005-2008ish. Rap music has gotten alot better since that period, but most great rap songs aren't played on the radio, just few singles from an album

Your not getting old. I'm 23 and my friend who is 31 were both having that same discussion the other day, maybe it's cuz in the 90's the economy was booming and cd sales made the music industry super rich and in turn there was GOOOD music, amazing videos etc, but personally I think society has lost its way when it comes to music movies everything the mainstream media puts out is either dependent on the past (current music that was inspired by the style of another era) or just complete garbage. I agree that there is still good music but it's a search now to find anything good. They stopped making good clothing in the 90s too, everything now is more or less a knock off of a better vrrsion that already existed in the past basically. In my opinion.

No way, I agree 100%! Everything is definitely over sexualized, and I can't stand most of today's music. Every now and then there might be a decent song in today's hits, but I listen to mostly nothing but older stuff like 80s and 90s and early 2000s and hell, I was born in '98. Just from what you put in the details I can tell you have a pretty good taste as well. I always joke around with everyone I think I was born in the wrong decade lol.

I think this problem is also in the book publishing industry.

You see you have all this popular music or books and you're not even sure why is it popular. They all feel like the same thing, and they don't speak about meaningful stuff, but it's popular.

I think it's a social issue more than you being old, and the proof is that you think that some music now is good too, and you recognised that there was awful work in the 90s too, so I think your music sense is fine.

You see, music and book publishers out there want the money. People are love sick? Publish a lot of romance and sexualized music and get the cash. I think it's the same with a lot of other creative works. Young Adults love stories with demons? Publish that. Dystopian fiction? Yeah, it's getting popular publish that too. Daily life dramas are getting popular? Make it? Kids love cartoon with stupid characters? Make more like spongebob and Fanboy and ChumChum.

I guess that's all there is to it.

I think there is a pretty popular consensus that the record industry today is looking for "formula bands" that try to sound like Taylor Swift or yada yada just to maximize their income potential. I think bands like Nirvana would have a very hard time finding any major label that would sign them today (not that they had an easy time finding a label in those days, but they eventually did). Big label executives today are most interested in getting their biggest bonus, and know nothing of creativity that makes listening to music worthwhile.

I have all but given up also on the movie industry also. Ghostbusters? Can't they think of something new and exciting? No, because there is money in milking a franchise rather than taking a chance with something new and original. I doubt The Matrix would even be made today. No formula movie there.

So no, you are not getting old. It is the entertainment industry going down the tubes.

I don't think so because I'm only 14 and I listen to mostly the same music. I agree because yes todays mainstream music is shitty. Yes I think 60s, 80s, 90s, 00s, was the best. The only songs I really have from today are songs from the album AM that came out in 2013 by the band the Arctic Monkeys. But there is peeps that are "old" who like today's music.

Each generation seems to have its own music. I grew up in the '60s when The Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion happened. For me personally, music peaked in the late '60s - early '70s. I hated disco and stopped listening to the radio, preferring my old LPs. My criticism of today's music is that there are so many sound-alikes now, as if some executive says, "Wow, ______ is hot right now! Let's do something that has that sound!" Also, back in my day, there were dozens of record companies and thousands of independent radio stations, each with their own DJ who could play pretty much what they wanted to. Now, it's Corporate Radio, and every station plays the same narrow playlist compiled by a focus group by a canned DJ. This stifles innovation, and unless you're the type who like to go surfing the web listening to promos by relatively unknown artists, you'll never hear anything different. As far as your comment about the blatant sexuality of the songs, there's an old advertising addage, "sex sells", and every clone out there tries to be a little cruder than the last one because of the shock value.

No, I only like about 9 songs from today and I'm 14. I listen to mostly 80s and 90s music because a lot of the music actually had meaning, which is lacking today. So no, you're not "old."
2016-07-07 04:10:42 UTC
I am in my mid 40s and I dislike todays pop music and I haven't cared for pop music since the late 80s. Some modern country is ok but I generally listen to classic rock,80s metal and some classic country. I am starting to listen to contemporary Christian music more today than ever because I am closer to God than ever as I think a lot of that type of music is the best being produced today!

No you arent getting old, you just have a great taste in music. I don't think I can agree with you anymore. Songs have no point in modern music and I was born in 2001. I've always listened to rock from the 70s like Bruce springsteen and aerosmith. Their songs actually had lyrics that actually had meaning. I heard a song today that had the lyrics, "oh my God there's the ***** that I want" music has hit an all time low, hopefully someone with musical talent shows up in the scene soon
?
2016-07-10 17:03:44 UTC
Definitely not. Dude, I'm only fourteen and I only listen to early 2000's music and sometimes 70's 80's and 90's. Back then, music actually had meaning. The lyrics meant something and each song was something special. Most lyrics in songs nowadays are just a bunch of sex noises. And the actual music, don't get me started. Y'know when you buy one of those tiny piano things for a little kid and the battery's just slowly dying, that's what music sounds like nowadays. I don't think you can even call that crap music when it's a synthesizer. I can see myself telling my grandkids, "Oh, back in my day you used these things called instruments to create music." You don't even have to be talented to get into the music industry anymore, you just need to be what society calls hot. Nobody gives a **** whether your talented or not anymore. You could be friggin Kurt Cobain and nobody would care because he wasn't 99.9% silicon. The only talented musicians left are the one's that were popular years ago. Bro, your not old just because don't like today's music. You don't have to be hip with the kids to be young. If we all liked the same **** then there wouldn't even BE other styles of music. What's popular is changing all the time and you can like whatever you want, it doesn't mean your old.

You're not old when you dislike the current music trends; your age is not determined by your music taste.

I agree that music these days is too focused on sex. It only sells because the artists in question flaunt their bodies as part of the marketing campaign for their music and I think that is horrifying. The moment where music began to be sold using sex, rather than the music itself, was when I feel music quality went on the decline.

I think older people generally don't like the music of today, but that doesn't mean if you don't like it you are old; it just means you don't like it.

You absolutely aren't old. I was born in the early 00's and I listen to Panic! At The Disco (only because I've been a genuine can for maybe 7 or 8 of the 10-ish years they've been around), but otherwise I don't listen to anything really newer than 90s music. It's all just preference. The majority of everything I listen to is 60s and 70s, and I really enjoy it. I don't care what others think of me for listening to it, and I couldn't give a damn about what they listen to or the stupid dances that exist now. Just be you, and if people give you crap for it, to hell with them; they're not people you would want to be hanging out with anyway. And yes I think today's music has gone downhill and many people don't have talent and are only famous because their daddy knows the big CEO of a big production company or mommy decides to sleep with someone to get their kid rich, and, by in turn, themselves rich.

Well, I AM old (48), but I like some of the music of today. I agree that the music of today is too focused on LOOKS over MUSIC. Especially for women, it seems you have to look like a model to be a singer (with a few exceptions). And it's easy to get cynical with a handful of producers churning out pop songs and seemingly controlling the industry. However, there are plenty of gems out there. Lukas Graham broke the mold and reached No 1 with "Seven Years". Ed Sheeran started out busking on the streets, and writes his own music. And what about Silento's "Watch Me" last year? That was such a cool and fun song, and totally homegrown. I suppose what I hate the most is the soul-less electronic/club music, and also overly sexualized videos.

I was a young child of 5 years old living in Liverpool when The Beatles got their first no1 hit! The 60s mersey beat sound took off and hit the air waves causing a whole new era of music! Brilliant stuff!

In the early 70s, I tuned into northern soul and began attending the all nighters with my mates! That was a real buzzin time! It began to phase out in the late 70s. I always hated the punk scene! Cant stand punk music!

Now that Im in the "autumn" of my life, Ive reverted back to "easy listening middle of the road " sounds which include Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett Matt Monroe, Ella Fitsgerald and Doris Day to name a few! Also love classical music too!

Truthfully, I think todays pop is full of illuminati type stuff which Im just not into!

To answer your question "Are you old when you dislike the music of today? "NO!" "You just have good taste if you dislike todays music!

I was born in 2000, so I'm only 16 years old. But yes I hate the pop of today. I always enjoyed biggie tupac and the old rap more. I'm a slipknot fan too (not a metal head), but I noticed their new music isn't nearly as good as Iowa or their first studio album. Maybe the old faces could make a return, or Dre could resurrect the real beauty in the hop hop industry.

No, today's music is legitimatly horrible. I'm actually 47, so I am somewhat old; but I have followed music my whole life. The last great musical decade we had was the 90's. The 2000's were ok, but the 2010's have outright sucked.

I was born in 1998 and I hate most of today's music. It's very rare for me to find music that is modern and that I like. I've gone so far to at least trying to listen to it and learn to like it. I can't even do that it's so bad. This is coming from a guy who listens to literally any kind of genre music you can think of. One day I could be listening to The Backstreet Boys and the next I could be listening to Slayer. The problem with today Music is there is no talent. Don't get me wrong, some of these singers and artists have amazing voices and talents but I feel like their overshadowed by terrible beats, melodies, rhythms, and let's not forget auto-tune. I really don't know why someone who subject themselves to that kind of music.

Sometimes it takes some time to absorb the present music styles, whatever the age , to accept the style of the music.

I grew up in the 60s so I can go all the way from Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet (well before Lady Gaga), through Jimi Hendrix, all of Bob Dillon, through The Seeds,The Balloon Farm and Jefferson Airplane through Grand Master Flash, Public Enemy, clear through Britney to Katy Perry.

Each period; psychedelic, surf music, bubblegum, even commercial pre-made industrialised pop ( Spice Girls, 1Dimension, the 80s boy bands),eventually the good writing and performing comes through,

Even the worst performer or biggest industrial mistake will hit a bright side even once: Remember Hung from American Idol?

Good and bad come in waves, like television shows: Doctors one season, Cops next, Crime investigation into situation comedy.

They all have their season. The trick is to enjoy the pearls and revel in the swine.

Anybody remember Blue Swede (Can't Stop This Feeling cover)?

You're not the only one. I'm 17 going on 18 & I don't like today's music. I have to filter through EVERYTHING & I can only salvage a few songs. I listen to a lot of the same ones over & over again.

Music is kinda limited now. For me personally, I completely cut out rap (although I really like it, it's just trash). I listen to Tori Kelly, Ed Sheeran is pretty good, Sam Smith, some Zedd, some Justin Bieber. I have to filter through every single little thing. I don't even listen to Beyoncé anymore. Neither Nicki Minaj, etc.. Like I don't listen to a lot anymore. I'm just cutting out a lot of music. Lately, everything has been about sex, money, drugs, cussing people out, I'm better than all of you, etc.. These people are right. A lot of songs nowadays don't have a lot of meaning. Just trash.

No, you're not old. If you're old, I'm old too. And I'm not even an adult yet.
?

No, it means you have good taste. Today's music is either safe, G-rated pop or over-sexualized and under-talented 'artists' who rely too much on the style and not enough on the substance of creating eternal quality music.

Born in the 60's, our parents played us symphonies, show tunes and swing music on top of the British Invasion and Acid Rock we loved. Sheltered in the 70's, listening to a lot of Soft Rock, we didn't discover Classic Metal til the 80's after Disco Demolition paved the way for New Wave to take over. And that was almost worse than Disco. Thank God for Punk and Hair Metal.

Everything changed when the Internet took over, bands didn't need a record label to 'make it big' anymore and record executives couldn't exploit their talent like they used to. They had to find new ways to do that using the web so they invented streaming. Really crappy music was released to the general public who doesn't know any better, turning some of it into gold. 'Real' musicians struggle but most have the backing of professional production and tour support to keep them on top.

Brooke made a comment about mainstream radio and in Chicago, we have two Classic Rock stations that don't play anything new by Classic Rock bands. Why do you think Steven Tyler went Country? So they'd play his sh!t on the radio, even if it is on a Country station.

In the past ten years, bands like Black Sabbath, Rush, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones have released new, critically acclaimed and Grammy winning music, that radio has ignored. Bands rely on their fan base to find it on their own because radio executives don't have record executives telling them what to play anymore with cash or cocaine attached to the 'stack of wax' that is now just electronic programming.

While I like most types of music, I cannot stand Rap, the monotonal monotony of the 'singer' mumbling to the beat and only being able to recognize the one word we must not say. I also cannot stand House music or Improvisational Jazz with the same reason for both - formless, seemingly unending with no structure or recognizable theme.

Still some good stuff around but the mainstream has never been more homogenous. This rather clever bit of satire really sums things up:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kpWkV7IBUw

I think modern pop music sorely suffers from a deficit of artists with extensive craftsmanship and cross-generational appeal. Am also a little concerned with the lack of stand-out newcomers on the fringes (i.e., commercial but not mainstream). That said, I've been out of the loop with music (popular and otherwise) for the best part of two years. Independent/underground music could be having a renaissance on the scale of '78-84 for all I know...

I suppose nostalgia and social and personal norms are determinants that are never truly at arm's length in instances such as these but I stand by most of the above paragraph.

Today s music is a sorry attempt to destroy hiphop.. the powers that be don t want hiphop to be as strong as it is.. your right the 90 s were incredible and you had artist that were out there being really rebellious and working hard a shedding light on the truth.. they somehow blacklisted those artists they don t want the music teaching the masses.. so to add insult to injury they have now somehow got behind the most non-speaking individuals and calling them hot artists .. its sad but true.

however the independent game has growing to be the new path to success cause once the masses get behind someone the industry has to follow suit. So I don t think not liking todays music makes you old its just your use to a level of professionalism when it comes to being an artist and these artists today have no respect for the art or being professional..

No you are not old, you are sane. I think the music is being pumped out to our radios by old corporate idiots who want to control what you listen to, so they decide what kind of music should be heard on their radio station, which is mundane and somewhat irritating. The soul of today s music is stripped out. All of the songs you hear right now isn t even a close second from what I hear from the 70 s or 60 s. Notice I didn t mention the 80 s, that is when this corporate takeover BS started. We did get a break from it and got some soul back in the 90 s but again it was stripped out by 2003 and I haven t heard anything good since. Music comes from the heart. Music that people listen to and respond to comes from the heart. Music being pushed for profits strips the heart out of it and people won t listen to it or respond to it. And that is what you hear on the radio stations today.

I'm born in 1984. I always liked the music of my day - home videos of me from c. 1991 singing Nirvana. I was huge Spice Girls fan in middle school, I was in love with NSYNC, and I went to 5 Britney Spears concerts between 1999 and 2002 alone. Even in college, I still liked the pop music of the early 2000's. I'm 32 now and find myself a little removed from the world of listening to the music that's "in", maybe I'm still stuck in the 90's, but I find it silly when people call the music of today "bad." It's fine - I don't really listen to it, but it's fine. I have a 16 year old cousin who listens to the same music as I do though lol.

Haha I agree, Im 14 and even I don't like the music of today (Im a hip hop/rap fan). The reason the music today is so popular is record labels pay radio stations to play their music. So obviously people are gonna absorb all the crap on the radio and become a fan of it. I enjoy old school rap (80s- early 00s) aswell as underground and independent hip hop, Im not too big on other genres (every so often rock/pop)
2016-07-10 02:04:13 UTC
I'm 17 and like the music of today along with classical music and 70's to 90's music as well :)

Maybe that makes me old :(
2016-07-07 13:42:34 UTC
Not at all, I'm 30 and think mainstream music lately has become stale through prolific use of sampling and covers, and the rise of reality TV manufactured artists whom are molded to meet their record labels ideals rather than any form of individuality.

Granted there are a spattering of fresh artist with real raw talent but they are a drop in the ocean compared to the safe tried and tested formulae that record labels have been relying on for decades.

Much like the movie industry.

Don't get me started on "Dubstep" or any of its subgenres of electronic dance music.

Shouldn't even be passable as music I'm.

I was born in 1997 and I don't like the music I hear today. I can't listen to the radio anymore. I always listen to music from the 60's - around 00. Like Fleetwood Mac, Blondie or johnny cash. Music that was definitely not from my time
2016-07-09 10:30:09 UTC
Quite the opposite. Great music died back in the mid 90's. Music's glory days were from the late 70's to the early 90's including all of the 80's.

Nope, I know quite a few people born in the late 1990s and early 2000s that hate today's music. I was born in the late 1980s and like stuff from the 1980s, and some things from the late 1970s/early 1990s. So it's not just you, it's a lot of people from your generation and later that hates today's music. :)
Scott

Not necessarily. I was a teen in the 90s and still like a lot of the 90s music but I always hated most of the 80s music. I also like some of todays music but not most of it. The people that like most/all of todays music are just posers, they don't actually like it but they pretend that they do to fit in. You just have to find the good music of today. Even in the 90s, most of the music they played over and over and over on the radio wan't really the best of the 90s.

Strip the date of the post and your year of birth and you've got a question which applies to EVERY generation. Old people of the 1920s didn't like "this new hot jazz". I think the brain stops worrying about the latest trends sometime between graduating high school and marriage. I'm in my 30s and have a massive iTunes of every song I'd ever care to hear. I rarely turn on FM radio anymore and my exploration and purchasing of new music is down to about a song every couple years. I tend to live in my own little sandbox of music.
2016-07-06 14:41:56 UTC
I was born a year after you (in 91) and I say that all the time. Music today sucks, and we never had literally every rap / hip hop song, pop song, etc talk about getting laid, sex, weed, getting high, etc. But my opinion is that popular songs you hear on the radio go with the current generation listening to it - which would be anyone up until they graduate high school at 17 / 18 years old (maybe 19). The current generation must want to listen to it (of course some exceptions are there where they hate it). Then for next generation it'll be on to something else. It always progresses - thats why the Beatles, ABBA, Hendrix, Rush, etc arent around anymore and it was only around during their time - then it would still be plaing on mainstream radio today.

I say the same thing about movies, tv shows, etc.

Some people I know of love the current stuff - they say its better. They listen to current mainstream pop & rap / hip hop. Watch current tv shows & movies. The whole 9 yards.

Some I know of too who love to be trendy and they in their mid 20s like myself now. Im like thats high school. You should see them - its like they literally never left high school. When the Patriots football team had a thing a few years ago they loved them until they faded from spotlight, and then they became Steelers fans. Vinyl currently made a comeback and you see them on facebook & instagram buying vinyl, but now I dont see them posting about it anymore except 1-2x per month, so I started to wonder if its slowly leaving mainstream culture. I can go on.

Popular music, like most forms of art, often reflects the sentiment of the new generation. It has been noted that every progression in art is successive, meaning that it is rebelling against the last progression and it will in turn be rebelled against by the next generation. If popular music today is hypersexual, it's probably because the 90s still adhered to traditional ideas of sexuality and taboos against (mostly female) promiscuity. It doesn't necessarily mean that you're getting old, but it does mean that the people who are making music and the people who are listening to it have changed.

The truth is, music fits the times that we live in. I was born in 1960 s I have always preferred what is now called the classics. I just turned 56 and have a very old soul so most folks do say that I am getting left behind. But that's okay, I know what I like !!!

You are not old when you prefer the music you grew up with. Tastes change. When you expand the kinds of entertainment that you enjoy, it does not make you 'old'.

Also, 'old' is VERY subjective. I am 22 years your senior. To you, you're quite young. I volunteer at a nursing home. Most every resident is at least 80. To them, I'm a kid. When you're 8, an 19 year old is 'old'.
2016-07-07 02:03:06 UTC
You're not getting old, music is just getting worse. It's all about how to make the most amount of money in the cheapest way possible. Music in the 90's was cheesy but harmless, now it just rots the brain and sends out all the wrong messages.

Rap was good up until 05ish??? Brah.. The official day that hip hop died was August 3rd, 1995, when the source held its annual award ceremony at Madison square garden. Suge knight called out puff daddy, snoop called out the east coast, nas was completely overlooked in favor of more radio friendly artists, changing not only his style but also that of the entire New York underground, where hip hop was born. After that night the disses, the videos, the fights, and eventually the shootings that took place SIX MONTHS APART left a huge void in the hip hop game that simply never got filled. Sorry man, but you can't turn toast back into bread. There are still underground rappers doing it right, but the mainstream will never see its third golden age.

No young people do not understand that music today is almost all corporate . Before the late 90's artists had the freedom of being creative in there music that is why 70% of music today sucks age has nothing to do with it

Never mind getting old, I am already :) I was born in 1948, in those day radio was the only source of music apart from my mother who could play any melody she heard on the piano

As to disliking the music of today, there is one which I will never consider as music - other that I listen to a wide assortment

I am the same way! I was born in 2001 and I listen to a lot of new wave, synthpop, blue eyed soul, and disco from the 70's and 80's. In my opinion, music started to not sound so good in the year 2014 and ever since then most of it is hip hop and about butts, sex, drugs, thug life, etc etc. And the rest of it is acts like adele and justin beiber being way over played on the radeo nothing really has a tune. So I am a retro girl! ;)

Oh please music has no time or age, it's a cycle that doesn't have age....Done, redone and so on. Take Prince for an example, his music will live on forever as other talented artist...I think it's a ridiculous question with no real answer! Yes the Beatles (John Lennon , Paul McCartney) Elvis, Rolling Stones and even Michael Jackson....Phenomenal and go way back to other era's ...a cycle. James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Too many to name and I don't want to break my nails so I'll stop...Forget age, not happening!! Besides I think, only opinion that you haven't grown up yet...Sorry

Let's be honest here, we are captive to our personal time era, that is true, but for example the60's/ 70's with Motown, the British invasion, the groups from the U.S. bleeding over into the 80's the solo acts from Barry Manilow to Elton John to James Taylor, to Neil Diamond, there were NO BETTER song writing taking place, today's music doesn't even come close, SORRY, but that's the way it is.

Not necessarily, but it seems interesting looking back that in an episode of the New Outer Limits, a signal from space that seemed like music to the youth of the day seemed like an interesting signal to someone a little older ("Music of the Spheres").

I seem to remember hearing in a music appreciation class that people rioted at the first performance of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite in 1910 or so, but that the music was a critical success.

The problem with today's music is that a "recording artists" can create, through the magic of technology, a song all on their own through use of music machines and software. There is no band behind you. The trouble with that is many of the better songs were collaborations between the band members. One added here, another added here, etc. It's called imagination - something today's "artists" do not have. So they find a small melody or niche and repeat it ad nauseum. I grew up listening to Vietnam era rock and protest, then brass-laced Chicago.

No im not old i was born in 1999 and i dislike popular rap music that is really creepy with stupid lyrics. Some electronic music also sucks. Oh and dont mention Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift and those popular pop singers.

I really like 90s electronic music like Gigi D'agostino. I like Aqua haha. Hmm agreed, everything nowdays is overly sexualized, not just music.. but women wearing less and less clothes, men wearing skirts (what?), magazines... horrible ik

There are loads of great lesser known/underground artists these days, for pretty much every genre.

It's sad to hear people completely write off today's music when they've only heard the worst of it. I guarantee most people could find plenty of new music they enjoy if they looked a little more.
?

I'd say more like when you stop listening. I had never heard a Justin Bieber song until about a year ago. I just stopped paying attention to pop culture about a decade ago. I was born in 1972. I could rip on "those kids" for Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift....but there was no shortage of bullsht music made during my generation and I really like Lady Gaga (100x better than that miserable hag, Madonna ever was).

I think the one exception is crunk rap, and T-Pain...which young & old, we can all agree is garbage.

Disliking the music of today doesn't make you old! It just means that, even though it might not seem or be for the better, times change. But no, don't think that you're old just because you don't like some of the (I hate to sound like my parents on this one) "noise" that todays generation provides!

I was born in 93. And while are still young I find today's music sucks. I mean really hard. I've always been in early rock bands like Metallica, Nirvana, and others, I also like Simon and Garfunkel, old panterra ( <-stupid phone, I'm not fixing it.) Some 60s and 70s. I really like Frank Sinatra. But newer bands and still in bands would be 3 days grace, Linkin Park, and Eminem.

I agree with you 90's- mid 00's (1990-2006) music was much better than today's. In retrospect , even britney and the boy bands were much better then lol. I live on music from 1990-2006 I even dress in low cut flare jeans, crop tops, jean jackets etc. I'm afraid I am stuck but I'm fine with it :) .

Does it make us old ? Well, I was talking about this with my 18 year old friend and she agrees everything was better then.. So, I guess not.

I wondered about that when I was young and rock n roll was on its way in. I didn't like the crooner then and wondered when I got older would I only like the music of my youth. I don't listen to music so I know little of todays music but at least I don't make a fuss about it. I did learn to really like the big band era and do listen to that music today...and I still listen to Janis Joplin and one of my big regrets was not being able to get off work to go see her at SIU. I am a left brained person.

I totally agree and it's not because you're getting old. Hip hop died in the mid 2000's! There's only a handful of new school rappers that I listen to now. R&B is dead. So whenever I listen to hip-hop/R&B, they're usually throwback songs. I've started listening to pop music. Most of it puts me in a good mood and it's more tolerable than today's rap music.
?
2016-07-08 04:40:54 UTC
I agree with you, but there is more music being made today than ever before. Media tends to only show a handful of primarily pop singers. Put some effort into other genres and maybe not just the stuff in the spotlight.

the few times I have to listen to any current music, to me it sounds like tuned screaming for a lot of the vocalists, I don't think there is a single song that I can identify the words, except when in a good many a certain phrase is repeated over and over

rap? music? the only music about it is the background accompaniment which generally has a significant 'beat' otherwise it is just a lot of repeated phrases

Music has gotten worse because it has become too corporate. If an act is popular, the people who run the record companies try to re create it over and over just to make money. This is why a lot of music sucks. Also it is more important how you look instead of how you sing. Someone like Joey Ramone would never make it now. They would say he wasn't hot enough.

No, it means that you are annoying. I was born in 1988 and I love both old and new music.

Sure, I might not like everything, but I sure try to expand my taste.

Just because a song is "generic" doesn't mean that it can't be good. Just because you like "old music" doesn't mean that you have "good taste." Just because you like a certain genre doesn't mean that everyone who likes a genre different than yours is an empty headed idiot. Music is supposed to be fun. It doesn't always need to come with some lame deep meaning or needs to be played on some instrument just to be considered "good."

People who think like you make music more if a chore than what it's supposed to be. It's sad.

Not really but many people may define you as a "yellderly person" which is a person who doesn't want to accept their own generation and tends to lean back towards the older stuff that used to be "hip". 2016-07-06 12:37:15 UTC
Not necessarily, though it may be more common for the current generation of youth to like today's new music, since music that sells to today's youth is what's most popular usually without nearly as much feedback from older generations. Older generations are probably more used to the music of their generation. Of course, there are exceptions and you'd have to make that call.

I enjoy music made by real wingers with real bands behind them. The groups who had a real band and dance steps. The OJays, Earth Wind and Fire, George Clinton. When hip hop rap came along it just wasn't my thing and still isn't. Watching award shows I rarely know who these musicians are or the words to the songs they make. Same thing goes for the actors of today. I stopped watching late night talk shows because I rarely know who the guests are.

2016-07-07 21:12:29 UTC
All the older generations think like that about the younger generation.

I use to be one of those hip hop heads that would be ranting about how much "crap" is out there until I realized that I gained a lot of knowledge and passion for underground hip hop, not because I ranted anti mainstream messages, but because I did my research on music.

People that rely on their generation's "mainstream" being played on the radio will eventually find themselves in your position questioning the new generations music because now you can't turn on the radio to get your dose of music because music changes with the trends when you are in the radio.

Try finding a radio station that plays your favorite music, and when new artist that have the same style they tend to show them love by playing their music and you get to listen to a new artist that plays the style you like.

I was born in 1995. I've listened to the music from early 2000s but I don't really care that much about music at that time. I start to really care about music in 2009 or 2010 and I used to listen to mainstream music and like it (even I listened to Justin Bieber! Thankfully I never be a fan of him. Yeah, I was 15 at that time....) A few years since I found Muse and be a big fan of them I don't really like mainstream music because they mostly only talk about love, sex, party, etc and they don't play musical instrument. I don't hate mainstream music, though, because Coldplay is my favourite band too because even though they're mainstream they still have quality and they play their musical instrument

Not necessarily. Everyone has their own preferences. Not everyone is into what's popular or modern, and that's totally okay, doesn't really have to do with age, although that can be a factor. There are a lot of reasons why you can find yourself not liking modern music. One of them is that it simply isn't the music you grew up with. You might find yourself having similar thoughts about television, movies, books, the sights and sounds and styles and fashions that you grew up with. At a certain age we seem more open to bonding with what is around us, and we become somewhat more selective as we acquire more life experience. Don't worry about it. To answer your question, it doesn't mean you're old. Try to have a listen from time to time and you may find things you like.

1990 ? Geesh......I am a Ton older than you...and what they say is music today simply is NOT music at all

most of it is noise, trash and useless...BUT as you say there are a few exceptions, and very few exceptions

and I listen to a wide range of music from over a half century before the 90 s from the Beginning of the 90 s music has almost ceased to exist....Noise-crap and meaningless rhyming has took it s place.......

so if you dislike what you hear today...is of no surprise because what you hear today is for the majority NOT music at all

Good, it' not just me! When your parents were young they thought they're music was better than their parents and on and on it went. But of course how you really judge music or anything ...is its effect on society, morally speaking.

Music changes, no doubt, in style, beats and rhythms... and that is okay and acceptable. But, when women becomes bitches, men dogs ...imagining there's no God above, or hell beneath. But we sing F the police etc.

Then, we are failing to recognize the power of words. It would be better to go back to simply whistling, while fishing, or skating, or helping a neighbor.

Than to allow the children to grow up thinking they are not learning how to hate good ...through bad music.

A good portion of the music today has no real substance to it, which is why a lot of people, even minors, find it distasteful. It's all about drugs, sex, and crime. Most mainstream music is junkfood for the ears. Decent mainstream hip hop artists right now i would say are Kendrick Lamar or Joey Bada$$ who have real complex, insightful lyrics.

As far as rock nowadays I'd say Jake Bugg or Arctic monkeys are cool.

All older music sounds better to me though im afraid, but i put that down to nostalgia

No, your not. People like Aaliyah, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Beyonce', Destiny's Child, Eminem, Kanye West, Ciara, Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, 98 Degrees, Backstreet Boys, Pink, & Mya'. Even more that never even get famous or published.

Their used to be more morals in song writing. They used to allow artists to keep their copyrights for the work and their faiths. Their used to be more women, well read, literate people in hip hop and all music. Since the handlers of celebrities, most of them, musicans, actors, & producers. They used to want to educate the public. They would write about love more and even faith. Now they force you to give up your faith and renounce it legally; even through that is illegal every where.

Now since a lot of questionable secret societies have kicked out students and people with ADULT ADD/ ADHD, etc. And keeping students and religious people out and harassing them and letting cons and bullies over run it. I used to know people.

it's nothing to do with getting old, you are getting mature as a listener, this happens with most of the musicians and composers that they get pissed off by listening to common music, by common i mean to say, when the artists run out of ideas or info, they create similar kind of music, which sucks, don't worry just keep listening different artists, you will find good music, there is incredible talent in this world...!
2016-07-09 17:06:35 UTC
There is new music for everyone no matter how old you are. meaning, there are at least a million people like you who say the same thing. musicians would be stupid in general not to pick up on the demand. You will find what your looking for if you look in the right places.

You are confused.

What your questions really is, Media portrayed "popular music"

If you go too the store and buy music, your gonna see whats "popular"

If you want the music you like, you will need too find a different source then the local Dept store or TV channels. Humans still view Cable Television?

It's funny Oldies music was always music from the 60's .oldies radio stations today play music from the 90's as oldies . sadly music from the 60's (best music of all times) is sadly vanishing away.
2016-07-09 11:07:18 UTC
There is only so long before a social law stops applying. It used to be that people would say your grandparents said the same thing about how bad the stuff was your parents listened to. Now I think what is being put out is absolute trash for every generation.

Hell no. I'm born in 1960 and can't stand today's crap. Spin those vinyl records of yesteryear and steal oldie MP3s off thepiratebay and load your devise with solid gold and steer clear of the white trash and negra music of today.

There is no "trash music" lmfao it's just music...different music is SUPPOSED to appeal to different people. Not everyone can like all kinds of music. I'm sure your parents/grandparents would say the same thing about the music you grew up with. It's a generational thing I suppose.
2016-07-08 09:23:19 UTC
I grew up in the '80s and early '90s. '80s and '90s music is better than most music being made now. Most of the current music made now is watered down, over-hyped schlock. Folks say that even music from the '50s-'70s is better. Taste in music has nothing to do with age.
2016-07-07 08:39:26 UTC

Its depends on what Artist and viewer thinks about always,Sex in music has big market nowdays , and also there is less creativity in nowdays so in fast world everyone try to sell out fast and grow money,,but after sometimes you will see everyone get bored that sexuality songs and again like creativity,,people still like creativity,,,for example GAME OF THRONES write around 1990 a epic story but people like it in 2016 because of its creativity and Art.

2016-07-11 04:34:01 UTC
No but i feel like you aren t looking hard enough to find music you would like which is coming out today like if you like 90s sounding grunge music there are people with similar sounds such as tame impala who have their own unique grungy sound and experiment with different sounds but like if you want to find different musicians with styles you like go onto soundcloud and you will literally find hundreds of emerging artists doing their own thing and producing music you would probably like as they aren t part of a huge label dictating to them what to make and are just making music to make music. Anyhow the top 40 is literally just there to make money as they are commercial radio. It kinda says their intention in the name...commercial. There are many independent radio stations on the internet which could play music you would rather listen to and expose you to new talent and there are quite a few internet labels which do something similar and aren t as commercial and just promote artists they like the sound of. TL;DR No you re not old. Music on commercial radio is just to make money. If you want to find new musicians you ll like you have to look for them as they aren t as popular so...use the internet as they most likely post music there as you can do that for free. Have a nice day =D
